Laminated glass is produced by combining two or more sheets of float/tempered glass with one or more interlayers. Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is the most common interlayer used in laminated glass, alternative transparent interlayers may be used in laminated glass to obtain special properties, such as solar control, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, fire protection, etc. Laminated glass also provides satisfactory structural behaviours under extreme loading conditions such as explosions. One of the main reasons for the use of laminated glass in building envelopes is its safe failure mode compared to that of float glass and tempered glass.
